![]() Hopper, Malkovich, and Pepper on the handball court.Ĭheck out the thrilling, action-packed new trailer for Prey, the newest entry in the Predator franchise. In fact, the only thing you can say about the film in the end is probably the same thing that got it greenlit: it's a story about New York sons of gangsters who fly to a small town to get their money back. There is no moment to tell your friends about, no "must-see" action. The directors show very little in the way of visual flair, the impressive stable of actors never really seem to stretch it out at all, and the film is unfortunately infused with the said gangster weariness noted above. The ultimate problem however and the reason it can't get above a 6 in our rating is the fact that the film is essentially. It has an ensemble cast, solid production values, and a generally well-written story. It's a classic fish out of water story and Knockarond Guys gets a few points for originality and a surprising amount of humor. The young gangsters (Pepper, Diesel, Green, and Davoli) descend on the small town and try to get their money back. Knockaround Guys is a generally likeable film. I'm wondering if another gangster flick is really what we need right now? It's sort of like all these WWII films coming out after Saving Private Ryan pretty much closed the book on the subject. Hell, even Jim Jarmusch takes a crack with Ghost Dog. The "mob" is even finding its way into comedies like Analyze This/That. The past 10 years (give or take) have given us Tony Soprano. I don't know about you guys but I'm getting a little gangster weary these days. Adding some fish to the rose garden is the subject matter of the film: gangsters. This is a character piece gents, despite all the action the trailer tries to sell you on. ![]() This is the film Diesel made just before The Fast and the Furious and it's got him plowing through a supporting role. Those of you hoping to see Diesel come in and waste a bunch of gangsters will be sorely and soundly disappointed. Already onboard for the "mobsters out of water" flick was Dennis Hopper, Tom Noonan, John Malkovich, Barry Pepper, and Seth Green. What's sort of funny about this whole situation is the fact that Knockaround Guys already had a decent complement of stars.
